Moehringer is a novelist and journalist, and he served as an executive producer on the film. He was born in 1964 and raised by a single mother (played by Lily Rabe in the movie) in Manhasset, New York, until he moved with his mother to Scottsdale, Arizona. His father, played in the film by Max Martini, was a radio DJ who left his life at an early age. Moehringer primarily knew his father as a voice on the radio.
As shown in the movie, the real Moehringer was looked to fill that father figure role in his life at his Uncle Charlie’s bar. In a 2012 interview with NPR, Moehringer said, “pretty early on, my mother kind of handed me off to my uncle and these guys from the bar, asked them to, you know, take me to the beach and to the ballgame. She knew that I needed some kind of male influence. She trusted my Uncle Charlie more than she – might have more than she should have. IMDB
